Portugal has a strong connection with the bicycle and its production, currently assuming itself as one of the European leaders in its export.

The Baixo Vouga region assumes a prominent role here. In 2001, the municipality of Águeda represented 51% of companies at a regional level and 37% nationally. The bicycle, not only its production, but as a means of daily locomotion and as a sport and leisure equipment, assumes itself as an integral element of the local culture.

In the municipality of Águeda it is possible to find a network of shared and dedicated urban cycling lanes that allow you not only to get to know the municipality in a more environmentally friendly way, but also to practice sports linked to this means of locomotion.

Pateira is located in a privileged location in this municipality, being presented by this network of cycling routes and enriching them with its characteristic biodiversity.

MTB Center

In 2017, the Águeda Bike Park MTB center was inaugurated, which has a set of trails with different levels of difficulty, approved by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA Europe), promoted by the Águeda MTB Club and the ABF Sports Club – Águeda Bike friends.

The use of the bike park is done without supervision and the use of protective equipment is mandatory.

Not only in the Águeda Bike Park BTT center but also in Pateira, there are several equipment and support services available to anyone who wants to make use of the tracks or walk the trails.

Electric Bicycle

The passage or access to Pateira can also be carried out by means of the electric bicycle.

In 2011, the Municipality of Águeda launched a project for shared use of the electric bicycle, beÁgueda, which promotes the adoption of more environmentally friendly behaviours. This project contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the municipality and offers a possibility of effortless and lower cost mobility (compared to car locomotion) for its users.

Daily use is possible for €2.00, and there is also a monthly option for €8.00 or annual use for €24.00. In the surroundings of Pateira it is possible to find two beÁgueda stations: in the Parish Council of Óis da Ribeira and in the Parish Council of Espinhel.

Canoeing is an activity that can be done individually or in a group.
The first canoes appeared in North America, being used by Indians in Canada as a means of aquatic locomotion. The first competition canoe appeared during the American Civil War in 1865.

The popularity of this modality led to its spread throughout the world. In Portugal, it was in the 30s that it gained greater strength, with the Portuguese Canoeing Federation being founded, years later, in 1979. For its formation, it counted, among other clubs, with the participation of A. C. de Fermentelos.

The waters of Pateira allow its practice in a free way, since there are no physical barriers in the water mirror.
Another option is to take walks.

Sailing is a nautical sport in which boats move through the water by the force of the wind.
The first sailing vessels for sporting and recreational purposes appeared in the early 17th century by noble Danish merchants. Although it does not stand out as a world power in this sport, Portugal has been achieving some medals in this modality, the first of which in 1948.

It is also in the country that the oldest nautical club on the Iberian peninsula is located, Associação Naval de Lisboa, founded in 1856.

Pateira de Fermentelos allows the practice of this sport in its waters. Its realization involves not only the activity in leisure time, but also in the school context, allowing the students of the Sports Training Center to explore the valences of this sport.

Stand Up Paddle

Stand Up Paddle is an activity that has been gaining more and more fans. Practiced on a board, kneeling or standing, it is an individual or group modality, for any age group.

This modality is an old form of surfing that presents itself today as an autonomous discipline.
Originating in the 1960s in the Hawaiian Islands, some international athletes were responsible for its diffusion in the 90s. Although much sought after in recreation and leisure contexts, it also fits into the national competitive framework with two categories within the National SUP Circuit Wave and four (both male and female) on the National SUP Race Circuit.

The Pateira water mirror allows, in addition to this leisure practice, to find a place with ideal conditions for training.
